How Are Tooth Crowns Installed on My Teeth?

The installation of tooth crowns typically takes two office visits. During your first visit, our team will examine your teeth to ensure they are able to hold a crown. Then we either file down the tooth or fill it in to make it the right size and shape to hold a crown securely. After taking an impression of your tooth and the surrounding area, we send it to a lab that makes a permanent crown out of ceramic, porcelain, or resin. We then install a temporary crown to protect your tooth.

During your second visit, the temporary crown is removed. Your dental crowns dentist will install the new permanent crown to your tooth with a special adhesive. After a short period of time, your new crown should feel, look, and function just like a regular tooth.

What are the Benefits of Teeth Crowns?

Teeth crowns are a useful addition whenever you have a weak or decayed tooth that is too damaged for a typical dental filling or when you have a cosmetic issue like a severely discolored tooth. Many people opt for dental crowns when they need to cover a tooth in order to strengthen it, protect it from further decay, or correct the appearance of it. Most crowns are made of porcelain or ceramic to better match the color of your existing teeth. However, many molar crowns are made with metal alloys that are stronger because the molars are typically not as visible as other teeth. Your dentist is able to help you decide which type of crown is ideal for your situation.
